CapitaLand saves $11m in utility bills

Straits Times: Sat, Aug 25

DEVELOPER CapitaLand said it has further reduced energy and water consumption at various properties around the world as part of a campaign to improve sustainability.

The firm - one of the first in Singapore to voluntarily report on sustainability achievements - released a report card yesterday that details the savings made last year across its portfolio. It has properties in more than 110 cities in over 20 countries.

The Singapore Exchange issued sustainability reporting guidelines for listed companies in June last year.

CapitaLand said it has slashed energy and water usage per square metre across its properties by 11.1 per cent since 2008 and cut utility bills by more than $10.6 million since 2009.

The savings helped the firm mitigate the effects of a "global escalation in utility costs", wrote president and chief executive Liew Mun Leong in the report.

CapitaLand is targeting a 15 per cent reduction in energy and water consumption by 2015 and a 20 per cent reduction by 2020, from 2008 levels.

The firm took measures such as setting targets for green building ratings and resource usage reductions, and linking them to remuneration for staff, including top management.

CapitaLand's efforts earned it a place last year among the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. The ranking is carried out by Canada-based magazine Corporate Knights.

The firm was also listed in the Sustainability Yearbook 2012, compiled by rating agency SAM and auditor KPMG. Only the top 15 per cent of global companies in each of the 58 sectors assessed were included. Out of 135 real estate firms in the world, only 20 made it onto the list.

Last year, CapitaLand was one of three Singapore companies to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index as well. In addition, it was named Asia Pacific Green Builder of the Year by Frost & Sullivan.

CapitaLand said in a statement yesterday that its inaugural Because iCare Awards will be presented on Sept 7. They recognise efforts by main contractors, tenants, vendors, service providers and staff to preserve the environment and promote health and safety.

The firm added that it is one of the sponsors bringing two pandas to Singapore on Sept 6.
