Orchard Central looks to new mall for more buzz

ORCHARD Central retailers are hoping the opening of a new mall next year near Somerset MRT will breathe a bit more life into their own mall.

Called orchardgateway, the new $700 million mall sits between Orchard Central and Somerset @ 313, and is linked to the MRT station by a basement.

Featuring an office block, a 500-room hotel and a library, the two towers of the project will stretch diagonally and straddle both sides of the road. Both towers will be linked by a glass overhead bridge.

It will also give Orchard Central a seamless air-conditioned link to the MRT station, something its retailers hope will give the centre a boost.

Developed by Far East Organization, Orchard Central has been plagued by low shopper traffic since its opening in May 2009 while its neighbour Somerset @ 313, directly above the MRT station, is often buzzing with shoppers.

Some Orchard Central tenants have packed up, blaming bad business, and leaving pockets of boarded up shop space in their wake...
