Britons expected to favour rented properties

BRITAIN's booming private rented sector, coupled with the lack of housing stock in the longer term and new real estate investment trust (Reit) rules, could encourage institutional investors to move into the sector.

Even though rental growth may slow this year, rents should resume their strong growth from next year, supported by a chronic shortage of homes, said Knight Frank in a report released yesterday.

The consultancy said that fewer than 110,000 homes were completed last year, a stark contrast to the estimated 200,000 to 250,000 homes needed each year to meet the needs of the growing population...
