Balcony as dumping ground

From drying clothes on rails to storing bicycles, some home owners use their balconies as dumping grounds rather than chill-out zones.

Plus, with houses shrinking in size over the years, some feel that practicality trumps interior style.

For property agent Anna Yeo, the balcony in her five-room flat in Toa Payoh has become the default storage area.

The 46-year-old says: 'Our house is small, hence we need the space to hang clothes and store bulky items such as bicycles. It is unsightly but we have no choice.'

On the other hand, Clover By The Park resident M. Goh, 42, has decked out her balcony with furniture and flowers.

For the housewife, the balcony in her Bishan apartment is an area to relax and she is put off by home owners who do not make the effort to spruce up the small space...
